The story
A deep blue field opens in the centre, framed by zigzag peaks that recall the Atlas mountains. In the middle sits a red diamond, a symbol of protection and of the family at the heart of the home. Around it runs a border of leaf-like motifs in cream and gold, like a field in bloom.
The blue is indigo, dipped and re-dipped until the wool takes on the shade of a clear sky. The brick red is madder root, boiled slowly to its depth. Pomegranate peel, saffron and henna give the oranges and golds of the border; walnut husk adds soft ochres and olive. The cream is raw, undyed wool. Over the years these pigments have softened into a rich patina.
